The first group of settlers, made up of eighty-five Aeolian families, arrived in 1763, escorted by garrisons of soldiers and together with workers assigned, under the supervision of royal engineers, to the construction of the fortifications, the public buildings and the village. It was them who cleared the land of stones and cultivated it for the first time and built internal roads and the first farmhouses. An unauthorized colonization had already been attempted in 1761, when a group of Liparoti had moved to Ustica. But, on September 8, 1762, after driving off some corsair assaults, the settlers had been caught in their sleep and deported as slaves to Tunis
